"A people without the knowledge of their past, history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." That's the well-known black consciousness mantra of Marcus Garvey and they were brought into harness and currency today at the St. Johns' College 4th annual Reading Fair. Monday 20 April, 2015
Maya Leaders from the south travelled by bus to Belize City for a ruling on government’s appeal in respect of a historic Supreme Court decision that goes back to 2007 and then 2010. In handing down its decision, the Court of Appeal this afternoon affirmed lands rights and tenure to thirty-eight Maya communities in the south. They got the land, but not the protection. It’s like owning a house and finding out the neighbors down the street might still have free access to it. It was a split decision in which Justices Dennis Morrison and Brian Alleyne made up the majority; the president of the court is Justice Manuel Sosa. (CHANNEL 5 BELIZE) |

6 October 2014
Dr. Aondofe Iyo of the University of Belize delivered a powerful talk to our first form students about the importance of African history and its connections to Belize. His presentation came at the right time since SJC is now in its 2nd year of a new history program integrating the teaching of African and Maya history in our curriculum.
